Yoga for Runners

I return to yoga studios because I find a teacher that inspires me personally and helps to improve my physical yoga practice. At Mala Yoga I found Stephanie. I’m sure the other teachers at Mala are lovely, but I keep returning to Stephanie’s classes; she is a runner and I’m sure that prompts a large part of my devotion. Stephanie specifically teaches a series of yoga classes geared towards runners, emphasizing poses that will bolster our time out on the pavement.

Yesterday during a private lesson (private only because no one else showed up for the 6:30 a.m. class) I came to understand that Stephanie’s return to running was a goal that she set for herself from a hospital bed. She shared her story with NYRR as part of their 2014 NYC Half Stories series.

Inspiring!

At Home Abroad

After failed attempts of moving to New Zealand and then Ireland, I sometimes worry that I’ve missed an opportunity to call another country home. However, learning of this family’s 10-month journey was inspiring and gives me hope that an international adventure could still be within my reach; with the added benefit of Cabs serving as one of my wing-men.

Mutually Accountable Excellence

Perhaps it is because of my work with self-organizing teams or my brother-in-law’s profession, either way I found this article fascinating.

On a nuclear submarine deep under the ice, the view was quite stunning.

My strongest impression, though, was experiencing something you see too little of these days on land: “Excellence.” You’re riding in a pressurized steel tube undersea. If anyone turns one knob the wrong way on the reactor or leaves a vent open, it can be death for everyone. This produces a unique culture among these mostly 20-something submariners. As one officer put it: “You become addicted to integrity.” There is zero tolerance for hiding any mistake. The sense of ownership and mutual accountability is palpable.

Hurricane Sandy

All of us are home on this Monday waiting for the worst of Hurricane Sandy to arrive and move on. The winds and rain are anticipated to be quite intense once the storm hits land and combines with tonight’s high tide. The rivers (both East and Hudson) have already exceeded their respective barriers, schools are closed through Tuesday, and public transport is suspended for known future. This is baby’s first Hurricane….though his typical day of pooping/sleeping/eating is not in any way affected (though mum is pleased that Ben is home for company).

One Month Old

At one month old, you continue to fascinate your adoring parents. We spend a good amount of our time staring at you and frequently commenting on your undying cuteness. Every day is a surprise, your habits and patterns constantly change, your sounds and expressions grow, and our desire to anticipate what you will need is continually dodged. You are:

– 9 lbs 4 oz

– 22 inches long

– have a head circumference of 33 inches

– a champ of an eater, devouring you meals every 2-4 hours

– you love to snuggle and snooze on our chests
